On 1st July 1942 Assam Bengal Railway and Eastern Railway were
amalgamated to form Bengal Assam Railway system which was divided according to the
political boundaries and Sealdah Division became a part of Eastern Railway on 14.4.1952
after reorganization.
The Division comprises six districts of the State, this Division
covers the geographical Land mass between river Hooghly on the West, Bangladesh
on the North and the Eastern side and the Sunderbans on the South.
Dum Dum Jn. Also plays an important terminal where Metro and
Circular Railway join with Sealdah Mail Lines.
The division also serves Bangladesh Railway Traffic via Gede
and Petra pole Station.
All Civil Engineering assets of the division like railway Track,
Stations, Service Building, Staff Colonies & Bridges are being maintained by Engineering
department. There are 3 Sr. Divisional Engineers, 3 nos. Divisional Engineers &
9 nos. Assistant Engineers working under Control of Sr. Divisional Engineer (Co-ordination).
Besides these officers, there are 65 Sr. Section/ Section/ Jr.
Engineers (Bridge) in non gazetted category are maintaining Railway Tracks, Works
& Bridges respectively.
